New Express Recovery Technology Recovers Lost Word or Excel Passwords within a Minute
New York, NY - April 1, 2006 - LastBit Software announces the release of the updated version of its Express Recovery
technology that can recover any password-protected Microsoft Word or Excel file within a minute.
Express Recovery is a unique technology developed by LastBit Software, that provide means of recovering
(i.e. breaking the password protection) of any password-protected Word or Excel document very quickly no
matter how long the password is. The recent research breakthroughs allowed decreasing the time required
to recover a password-protected Word or Excel document from two to one minute.
The technology requires a significant amount of computer resources and, thus, the process of password recovery
is performed in the LastBit datacenter. The client program establishes connection with the datacenter over the Internet.
However, the privacy of users is guaranteed as only a small part of the document header, containing the encryption data,
is sent to the datacenter.
Since each document has to be processed individually in the datacenter (even if there are several documents protected
with the same password), the charge for the Express Recovery service is applied on a per-document basis.
LastBit Software provides a money-back guarantee in case the recovery process fails for some reasons.
The new technology is implemented in the latest releases of the corresponding password recovery software:
Word Password for recovering passwords for Word documents, Excel Password for recovering passwords for
Excel documents and the Office Password bundle that contains both Word and Excel password recovery modules.
Though the exact algorithms that Express Recovery uses are not known, LastBit Software has provided some details
on the topic. The Express Recovery technology takes advantage of the fact that due to export restrictions,
the Microsoft Office applications limited the length of the encryption key to 40 bit. Huge multiterabyte tables have been
built to reduce the time required to search for the necessary encryption key.
The Express Recovery technology is a further development of the Guaranteed Recovery technology, released by
LastBit Software in 1999. While Guaranteed Recovery recovered any Word or Excel password within 24 hours,
Express Recovery reduced this time to one minute.
